China''s Battery Storage Capacity Doubles in 2024: A Leap in
Throughout 2024, a total of 515 new battery storage stations were put into operation, contributing an additional 37 GW/91 GWh of capacity. This figure is more than
There was a total of 1,473 operational electrochemical energy storage stations by the end of 2024, with a total installed capacity of 62.13GW/141.37GWh, according to data from the National Electrochemical Energy Storage Power Station Safety Monitoring Information Platform.
From ESS News China's electrochemical energy storage industry saw explosive growth in 2024, with total installed capacity more than doubling year-on-year, according to a report released by the China Electricity Council (CEC) on March 29.
The share of pumped hydro storage in the total installed capacity fell below 50% for the first time. Among these, the cumulative installed capacity of non-hydro energy storage surpassed 50 GW for the first time, reaching 55.18 GW/125.18 GWh. Power capacity grew by 119% year-on-year, while energy capacity surged by 244% year-on-year.
The cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage in China is expected to exceed 100 gigawatts (GW) by 2025, according to the Energy Storage Industry Research White Paper 2025 released by the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics on 10 April. The capacity is likely to surpass 200GW by 2030, more than double the 2024 level of 73.76GW.
