Niger''s New Solar Projects Pave the Way for a Diversified Energy
These Solar Projects are expected to significantly increase the country''s grid-connected power generation by over 20%, providing reliable and affordable energy to all.
Niger was one of the first countries to consider renewable energy technologies as a solution to its energy needs. This commitment dates back to the 1960s, when Niger set up the Solar Energy Office (Office de l'Energie Solaire – ONERSOL), later renamed the National Solar Energy Centre (Centre National d'Énergie Solaire – CNES).
Solar PV and other solar energy technologies have been promoted in Niger through various outlets, including the national school television programme. Installation of solar technology has continued, particularly in PV pumping areas and through education and health infrastructure electrification.
Niger enjoys high solar radiation conditions in all eight of its regions. Average solar radiation is 5-7 kWh/m2 per day, and there are seven to ten hours of sunshine per day on average. Further data collection and analysis are needed to ensure their potential and viability.
This transformative project, funded by the World Bank through the International Development Association (IDA), will enable Niger to better balance its energy mix, which is currently largely dominated by thermal energy. This initiative is particularly crucial for a country that frequently faces climatic shocks.
