Energy storage resources have become an increasingly important component of the energy mix as traditional fossil fuel baseload energy resources transition to renewable energy sources. Currently 23 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have 100% clean energy goals in place.
Energy storage technologies are undergoing advancement due to significant investments in R&D and commercial applications. For example, work performed for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory provides cost and performance characteristics for several different battery energy storage (BES) technologies (Mongird et al. 2019). Pumped storage hydroelectric projects have been providing energy storage capacity and transmission grid ancillary benefits in the United States and Europe since the 1920s (Energy Storage Association n.d.). 2 percent of the capacity of the electrical system (U.S. Energy Information Administration 2020).
With energy storage, the plant can provide CO2 continuously while allowing the power to be provided to the grid when needed. In short, energy storage can have a significant impact on the unit's competitiveness.
