Turkish company Yeo and local firm GEI Power, have set a $65 million investment in Zambia, earmarked for the construction of a photovoltaic solar power plant integrated with an electricity
In Zambia, the legal and regulatory framework for energy storage, including renewable energy storage, is primarily governed by the Energy Regulation Act No 12 of 2019 and the Electricity Act No 11 of 2019. These Acts establish the ERB as the primary regulator, responsible for licensing and setting standards for energy storage activities.
Zambia implemented new Electricity (Open Access) Regulations in 2024 to promote a more competitive and sustainable energy market. These regulations aim to address challenges arising from the country's heavy reliance on hydropower and a surge in private investment in the energy sector.
The Zambian regulation foresees customs duty and VAT exemptions for most equipment used in renewable energy or battery storage projects. Detailed information is provided in In this section, we discuss the opportunity of battery storage in combination with solar photovoltaics from a financial point of view.
These droughts and heightened evaporation from increased heat have caused the lake's water levels to drop to record lows. As of this week, the lake's live water storage (water available for power generation) had dropped to just 8 per cent, resulting in Zambia announcing that the powerplant on its side of the lake will be shut on September 14, 2024.
